Unit Five: The Expansion of Expression

The individual's right to express his or her ideas is protected by the First Amendment. That right has been limited by the Court in wartime, and it has been expanded as people have used symbolic speech to express a political viewpoint. Finally, as technological frontiers have developed and the Internet has emerged as a participatory form of "mass speech," citizens have been forced to reevaluate the extent of First Amendment protections.
